Pope Francis has called for prayers for the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

During his words to Spanish-speaking pilgrims during his weekly General Audience this morning, Sept. 27, 2017, he said: “I ask you to remember in prayer the victims and those affected by the hurricane, which in these days has battered the Caribbean, in a particular way Puerto Rico.”

According to Vatican Radio, Hurricane Maria, which produced winds of 155 mph, is the strongest storm to make landfall in the US territory in some 85 years.

As of Sept. 27, Maria is a Category 1 hurricane and has moved toward the coast of North Carolina with sustained winds of 75 mph.
