The diocese, which embraces the whole of Sweden, was founded on June 29, 1953, by Pius XII. The diocese has about 144,000 Catholics.
The most important event in the diocese’s recent history was John Paul II’s visit to Sweden on June 8-10, 1989.
The current bishop, Carmelite Anders Arborelius, is renowned as a spiritual guide, also outside the Catholic Church, through his retreats and spiritual books.
Another step forward in the Church’s process of integration in Sweden were the celebrations for the fifth centenary of the birth of St. Bridget, in which members of the royal family and many Christian confessions participated.
St. Bridget is increasingly regarded as a saint for the whole of Sweden, even though the Lutheran tradition does not allow devotion to saints.
