The Vatican announced today that Pope Francis has chosen the theme for next year's ordinary Synod on the Family to be: “The vocation and mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world.”

The Vatican said the announcement was made at the general congregation of the synod, held this morning.

The 14th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops will take place in the Vatican from 4 to 25 October 2015. Next year's meeting will complete the Church's examination of the marriage and the family and the challenges they face in the world today. It will then be followed by an apostolic exhortation issued by the Pope.
