Layman Leads 8 Million Charismatics in India

For the first time in the 30-year history of the Charismatic movement in India, the National Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services has elected a lay person chairman of the National Service Team at Mumbai.

The new chairman, Cyril John, has been chairman of the Delhi Charismatic Renewal Service. A postgraduate in English literature, John works as undersecretary in Lok Sabha Secretariat.

Catholic Charismatic Renewal, which began in 1967, is the largest spiritual renewal movement in the history of the Church. More than 8 million people in India are involved in the Charismatic movement.

Archbishop Vincent Concessao of Delhi, and Bishop Valerian D´Souza of Pune, episcopal adviser appointed by Catholic Bishops´ Conference of India for the Charismatic Renewal, congratulated the new chairman, elected Jan. 6.
