Esztergom, Hungary, Marking 1,000 Years of Faith

VATICAN CITY, APR. 27, 2001 (Zenit.org).- On the millennium of the primatial See of Esztergom, John Paul II congratulated Hungarian Catholics on their 1,000 years of Christian witness and fidelity to the Pope.

The country will commemorate this event Sunday, with a national pilgrimage to that city.

In a letter to Cardinal László Paskai, John Paul II said he hopes that the See of Esztergom, known as the «Mother and Teacher of all the Churches of Hungary,» will shine together with the other communities as an «example of enlightened faith and renewed Christian life.»

Last year, the Central European nation of 10 million people celebrated the millennium of its evangelization.
