LJUBLJANA, Slovenia, JUNE 21, 2001 (Zenit.org).- A referendum has decided by an overwhelming majority to prohibit single women from having recourse to artificial insemination.

According to the results given by the National Electoral Committee, 72.4% of the voters favored abolishing a 2-month-old law that allowed single women to be inseminated artificially.

The referendum Sunday was requested by members of the Conservative Party of Parliament, who believe that the right of a child to have a father has priority over the right of a woman to have children. Opponents said that one-third of Slovenia´s families have only one parent.

Catholics comprise about 70% of the 2 million people in this republic that was once part of Yugoslavia.
