Bush Names Baptist Leader to Panel

WASHINGTON, D.C., SEPT. 20, 2001 (Zenit.org).- President George W. Bush has named a leader of the Southern Baptist Convention to a panel on religious liberty.

Richard Land, a prominent evangelical thinker, was appointed Monday to the nine-member U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, which Congress created in 1998, the Associated Press reported.

Land is president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, the Southern Baptist´s public policy arm, and has organized Washington summits on religious persecution.

The 15.9-million-member Southern Baptist Convention is the nation´s largest Protestant denomination.
