"Only the recovery of profound Christian roots can restore the spiritual energies and moral weight that our society needs more than ever," the cardinal told the bishops´ Permanent Commission on Monday.

Cardinal Ruini, the Pope´s vicar for the Rome Diocese, called for "pastoral conversion," which implies "an endeavor to appreciate the Christian laity," an idea that "has found its most appropriate sacramental foundation in the ecclesiology of Vatican II."
