"Excavator Priest," 60, Killed in South Africa

ROME, DEC. 10, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Father Michele D´Annucci, 60, an Italian missionary, was killed by during an apparent robbery Saturday in Shoshanguve South, near Pretoria.

The Misna missionary agency reported that the priest, who belonged to the Congregation of the Sacred Wounds, was shot. The killers stole his car and mobile phone, Misna reported.

Father D´Annucci, superior of his congregation in South Africa, Botswana and Tanzania, had spent the day in Shoshanguve South to prepare a group of young activists for confirmation.

The murdered priest arrived in South Africa 30 years ago, prior to being ordained, said Father Gianni Fusco and Domenico Telesca, the parish priest and mayor, respectively, of Atella.

Father D´Annucci was known as the «Excavator Priest» because of the great number of charity, care and church buildings he had constructed.
