«To kill a human being can never be part of medical practice,» the bishops wrote in a statement of the Swiss bishops´ conference (CES).

CES suggested that future legislation on the matter should be adopted according to directives of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences.

At the same time, the bishops stress the importance of offering patients palliative treatments, and of avoiding therapeutic cruelty.

The episcopal conference, however, protested that the Helvetian National Council has not limited the activities of groups supporting assisted suicide, because «the control of these situations cannot be left solely to the cantonal or municipal administrations.»
