The WFP recently announced plans to build on a pilot program that proved successful at increasing school attendance and reducing children´s hunger.

“Hunger is a constant tragedy for millions of people worldwide, and the School Food Program has proved to be very effective and helpful to the poorest children in the world,” the Holy Father said from his library window, after praying the Angelus with pilgrims gathered below in St. Peter´s Square.

“I pray that the international community will generously support the WFP´s work and efforts, and invoke God´s blessing so that they will be given strength and perseverance in their efforts,” he said.

Early next year WFP plans to launch a school food program in Afghanistan, so that children, especially girls, will be able to return to the classroom.
