Cardinal Martini, Nearing 75, Asks to Retire

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 6, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, archbishop of Milan, has presented his resignation to John Paul II for reasons of age, Church sources reported today.

On Feb. 15 the cardinal turns 75, the age established by canon law for retirement.

In the past, Cardinal Martini said he would like to retire to the Holy Land, to continue studying the Bible, his lifelong passion.
