Auxiliary Bishop Jenky of Fort Wayne Named to Peoria

WASHINGTON, D.C., FEB. 12, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II has named Fort Wayne-South Bend Auxiliary Bishop Daniel R. Jenky as bishop of Peoria, Illinois.

Bishop Jenky succeeds John J. Myers, who was named archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, last July.

Daniel Jenky was born in Evergreen Park, Illinois, on March 3, 1947. He attended Quigley South High School Seminary and St. Laurence High School. In September 1965, he became a postulant in the Congregation of the Holy Cross, Province of Indiana. He earned a bachelor´s in history at the University of Notre Dame in 1970 followed by a master´s in theology in 1973.

He made final profession of vows in 1973 and was ordained a priest on April 6, 1974.

Jenky was associate director and later director of Campus Ministry at the University of Notre Dame from 1976 to 1984, with responsibility for the pastoral care of students, faculty and staff at Notre Dame. He was appointed rector of Sacred Heart Basilica, the university´s main church, in 1977 and became an instructor in theology in 1985.

From 1985 to 1990 he was religious superior of members of the Congregation of the Holy Cross at the University of Notre Dame.
