The former chief rabbi of Rome spoke Monday at a congress on «Creation, Sanctuary of God: Pilgrimage of Quest, Encounter, Contemplation and Witness,» organized by the Roman Work of Pilgrimages in collaboration with the Italian bishops´ conference and the newspaper Avvenire.
«Throughout the world efforts are being made so that peace will reign in the Holy Land,» he said. «But it is also true that the interventions of many states are being noted, which have nothing to do with Israel.»
According to the rabbi, the way to peace lies in «a table of joint confrontation, and an institutionalized and recognized Palestinian state with which to dialogue.»
«We must not lose confidence, not only in peace but also in the development of dialogue among religions,» he continued. «It is only in this collaboration that we will be able to find the peace of spirit and become a blessing for mankind. And when all peoples consider one another worthy, then it will mean that the Messiah has arrived.»
