Ukraine Erects 2 Statues in Honor of John Paul II

KIEV, Ukraine, JUNE 26, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Two statues of John Paul II were unveiled in Kiev and Lviv to commemorate the first anniversary of his historic visit to Ukraine.

Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, presided over the ceremony Tuesday, to place one of the statues in the apostolic nunciature of Kiev.

«It is a gift of the Ukrainian people to the Pope for his love,» said Archbishop Tauran, who arrived in Ukraine last Saturday.

The second statue was erected in Lviv, next to the Church of the Holy Virgin.

During his June 23-27, 2001, visit to Ukraine, John Paul II promoted reconciliation between Catholics and Orthodox.
