Rowan Williams, who took over Sunday as successor to George Carey, has urged the Constitution Unit at London University to draw up a blueprint for the Anglican Church’s disestablishment.

The government has said it would back disestablishment only if the Anglican Church supported it.

Cutting ties with the state would involve scrapping laws passed since King Henry VIII set himself up as supreme ruler of the church in the 16th century.
