At the 15-minute private audience held Saturday in the Pope’s study, Toledo introduced his entourage, headed by Defense Minister Aurelio Loret.

In the absence of Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican secretary of state, who is visiting Ecuador, President Toledo met with the cardinal’s substitute, Archbishop Leonardo Sandri, and with Monsignor Pietro Parolin, recently appointed Vatican undersecretary for relations with states.

These «talks have allowed for reflection on relations between the Church and the state in Peru, and to review some of the international questions of particular importance,» Vatican spokesman Joaquín Navarro-Valls said in a press statement.
