L’Osservatore Romano on Sunday commented on the division of the Gaza Strip in three sectors, enforced a day earlier by the Israeli army. The measure impeded the movement of Palestinians on roads that join the north and south.

The paper commented that this measure «is added to the series of impositions, violence and vengeance that, as the Pope said in his message for the World Day of Peace on Jan. 1, 2003, have shattered every effort so far to engage in serious dialogue on the real issues involved.»

According to Reuters, at least 1,731 Palestinians and 671 Israelis have died since the start of the Palestinian intifada in September 2000.
