Pope Drew 2.8 Million to Vatican in 2002 for Public Meetings

VATICAN CITY, JAN. 1, 2003 (Zenit.org).- More than 2.8 million people met with John Paul II in the Vatican in public meetings during 2002, according to official data from the Holy See.

Counting international trips, that figure would climb to about 8 million, said the Italian Ansa agency.

The prefecture of the Papal Household on Dec. 30 released the data for Vatican events. It said that 2,823,500 people attended general audiences, liturgical celebrations, special audiences and the Angelus encounters.

These data include 410,300 who attended the 46 general audiences, and 1.05 million who attended papal liturgical celebrations.
