In a message written today, the Pope recalled this «prestigious protagonist of important moments of Italian history,» who spent himself for the «economic and social development of the country.»

In a telegram of sympathy addressed to Cardinal Severino Poletto, archbishop of Turin, the Pope requests that his sympathy be conveyed to Agnelli’s wife, Marella, and his relatives, «sharing profoundly in their sorrow for the grave mourning,» and assured the family of his prayers for the soul of the deceased.

The history of 20th-century Italy was closely linked to that of Fiat, the nation’s most important private industrial conglomerate.
