Appointed as auxiliary bishop in December by the Pope, he was ordained Thursday at St. Mary’s Cathedral, the Associated Press reported. Asians comprise about 25% of the members of the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

Born in Beijing, Ignatius Wang was ordained in Hong Kong in 1959. Unable to serve in China because of the Communist government, he left for Rome. In 1974, he moved to San Francisco, where he worked in parishes and eventually also served as chancellor.
