«How could the former regime promote adverse brutal torture upon its own citizens?» the bishops of the Kisumu metropolitan region ask in their statement.
«The existence of terror squads with impunity to physically and psychologically torture suspected political dissidents without the due process of law should never have happened at all in a democracy such as Kenya,» said Bishop Cornelius Arap Korir, vice chairman of the bishops’ conference, and the five other prelates.
«This was total travesty of justice and a very disconcerting violation of human rights,» their statement said. A new government took over in Kenya in January.
