Bush's "Faith-Based" Plan Fades in Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C., MARCH 28, 2003 (Zenit.org).- Congressional sponsors of President George Bush’s faith-based initiative have given up on legislation that would make it easier for religious organizations to get government grants, the Associated Press reported.

The sponsors failed to get the Senate to approve a watered-down version of the Bush initiative, AP said today. Instead, their bill would simply provide tax breaks for donations to charities.

«In the United States Senate this year, you’re lucky to get anything, and I’ll take anything,» Senator Rick Santorum, a Pennsylvania Republican, said Thursday. He said the tax provisions would aid charities, including many that are religious.
