2 Episcopal Nominations in Quebec Province

OTTAWA, JUNE 21, 2004 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II has named two Montreal auxiliary bishops to other dioceses in the province of Quebec.

Auxiliary Bishop André Rivest, 62, has been named to head the Diocese of Chicoutimi, succeeding Bishop Jean-Guy Couture who has reached the mandatory age of retirement, 75.

Auxiliary Bishop Louis Dicaire, 57, has been named auxiliary of Saint-Jean-Longueuil.

Bishop Rivest was named auxiliary of Montreal in 1995. He has worked for many years in vocations ministry and in 2002 was co-chair of the 3rd Continental Congress on Vocations that was held in Montreal, organized jointly by the Canadian and American episcopal conferences.

Bishop Dicaire was named auxiliary of Montreal in 1999. He is a member of the episcopate’s French Sector Commission for Liturgy.

The Diocese of Chicoutimi has a Catholic population of 260,000. The Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil, the fourth largest in Canada, has a Catholic population of 550,000.
