Bishop Named for Northampton, England

NORTHAMPTON, England, MAY 24, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed Monsignor Peter Doyle, a parish priest from Winchester, England, to be the next bishop of Northampton.

Monsignor Doyle, 61, was administrator of St. John’s Cathedral in Portsmouth from 1975-1987 and, after three years at St. Joseph’s, Maidenhead, has been parish priest in Winchester since 1991. The Vatican press office announced the new appointment today.

In 2001, Bishop Patrick Leo McCartie retired from leading the Northampton Diocese. He was 75 at the time.

Monsignor Doyle’s episcopal ordination is scheduled for June 28 in Northampton.

The Diocese of Northampton has about 171,000 Catholics. It is served by 83 active diocesan priests and 21 religious-order priests.
