The theme of the CELAM event is “Disciples and Missionaries of Jesus Christ so That Our Peoples Will Have Life in Him.” The Pope proposed the subtitle, taken John 14:6: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.”

When the Holy Father received the president of CELAM, Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz of Santiago, Chile, on July 7, he accepted the proposal but asked that the expression “in Him” be included, as well as the Gospel quotation.

The location of the general conference has yet to be established. Previous assemblies were held in Brazil (1955), Colombia (1968), Mexico (1979) and Dominican Republic (1992).
