The Vatican press office published the papal message today. A solemn commemoration of the Mexican cardinal’s golden priestly anniversary took place Sunday with a concelebrated Mass in Rome’s Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere.

After extending greetings to the Mexican nation and highlighting the work of Cardinal Lozano Barragán, 72, in his service to the Roman Curia, Benedict XVI ends his message, written in Latin, with his apostolic blessing.

The cardinal was ordained a priest on Oct. 30, 1955, and consecrated a bishop on Aug. 15, 1979. He was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in the consistory of Oct. 21, 2003.

He has been president of the Council for Health Care Workers since August 1996.
