Benedict XVI was preparing to celebrate the tradition Midnight Mass in St. Peter's Basilica.

On Christmas Day at noon he is expected to deliver his Christmas message and bestow his blessing "urbi et orbi" (to the city of Rome and the world) at St. Peter's Square.
