SALAMANCA, Spain, DEC. 14, 2008 (Zenit.org).- The Pontifical University of Salamanca, at the petition of its communications faculty, has unanimously agreed to award the director of the Vatican press office with an honorary doctorate.

Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi has been a Vatican spokesman, as the director of the press office, as well as Vatican Radio and Television, since July 2006, when Benedict XVI appointed him to replace retiring Joaquín Navarro Valls.

Federico Lombardi was born in Northern Italy in 1942 and joined the Jesuits in 1960.

Last May, he received another honorary doctorate from the Regis College of the University of Toronto, one of Canada’s most prestigious theology faculties.
