Only months before the international World Cup, which will begin June 11 in South Africa, the Catholic Church will be holding its own championship.
The annual event, sponsored by the Holy See and organized by the Centro Sportivo Italiano, will be inaugurated Thursday in the courtyard of the Paul VI Hall.
Massimo Achini, the president of the center, will make the presentation along with the center’s ecclesiastical consultant, Monsignor Claudio Paganini, also the president of the Clericus Cup.
This is the fourth tournament of its kind and will gather seminarians, as well as some priests, from sixteen schools in Rome.
The players, who come from various countries worldwide to study in Rome, will begin their games on Saturday at the Oratorio San Pietro.
The first season took place in 2007, and the cup was won by Redemptoris Mater, the 2009 champions as well.
The school also made it to the final round in 2008, but was beat by Mater Ecclesiae, 2-1.
