TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras, OCT. 14, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Though Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez Maradiaga’s office was shot at last Sunday, a spokesman for the Church there is not classifying the attack as an assassination attempt, though he said there is consideration of moving the cardinal to safer quarters.
The cardinal was abroad when the gunfire occurred. The archdiocese did not report the event to the public until Tuesday.
Cleaning staff on Monday found the bullet, which broke the window on the side of the office where the cardinal works.
The chancellor of the archbishopric, Father Carlosmagno Nuñez, reported the information to the Honduran media. He said that consideration was being given to finding an alternative place for Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga to work, given that he has recently been threatened with violence.
He pointed out that at least on two occasions in recent months there have been attempts to attack the cardinal. The prelate is already protected by the Honduran National Police, due to suspicions that political groups or delinquents might attack him.
Neither the Catholic Church nor the police wished to confirm that Sunday’s gunfire was an attack against the cardinal. However, Father Nuñez stated that a report was filed with the competent authorities.
«The Church will try to maintain her position, always in favor of a just social order,» he said. «I think there is no way they can silence the voice of the Church.»
