Auxiliary Named for Bissau

BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau, MAY 13, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI today named an auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Bissau.

Bishop José Lampra Cà, 47, will assist Bishop José Câmnate na Bissign, 57.

Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau in western Africa, has some 165,000 Catholics in a population of just over 1 million. Half of the nation is Muslim with another 40% following traditional religions. Christians make up 10% of the population.

The faithful are served in two dioceses by 64 priests and nearly 200 religious.

José Lampra Cà was born in 1964 and ordained in1997. He was formerly the rector of the St. Kizito Minor Seminary and professor of philosophy in the Major Seminary of Bissau.
