On Friday, the Apostolic Nunciature reported that the nuncio «underwent a delicate lung surgery two weeks ago,» and that there were «post-surgery complications.»
The note reported that the archbishop is «has been placed on assisted ventilation to attempt recovery of his lung function,» and asked «that bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful offer sacrifices and prayers for the health of the apostolic nuncio.»
The Baltimore Sun is reporting today that Archbishop Sambi remains in critical condition at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Archbishop Sambi, 73, was named papal nuncio to the United States in 2005. He hosted Benedict XVI at the nunciature in Washington, D.C., during the Pontiff’s visit in 2008.
The Italian native was ordained to the priesthood in 1964. Prior to his appointment to the United States, he served as nuncio to Burundi, Indonesia, Cyprus and Israel. He had also served as apostolic delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine.
