Rome Prayer Vigils Organised on Eve of Canonization

Faithful Will Also Have Opportunity to Confess

The Vicariate of Rome is organising a number of liturgical events on the eve of Sunday’s canonisation. 

At 5pm on Saturday, in the basilica of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, there will be an evening of vespers and a vigil Mass for Divine Mercy Sunday, followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Up until compline at 8.30pm, the basilica’s cloister will put on display memories of Pope John XXIII and the Second Vatican Council.

Prayer vigils will take place at 6pm in the basilica of St. John Lateran for faithful from Bergamo, the home of John XXIII, as well as another at Santa Maria in Montesanto (Chiesa degli Artisti) in Piazza del Popolo from 7pm.

Then at 9pm, there will be a “white night” of prayer when churches in Rome’s centre will be open for prayer vigils and confession. The following eleven churches will be taking part, each with liturgies in various languages.

Catholic Action will also be holding a prayer vigil in the parish of Santa Maria delle Grazie al Trionfale, from 10.30pm until 5am.
