Pope Francis met with President Anote Tong of the Republic of Kiribati today at the Vatican Apostolic Palace this morning.
According to communique released by the Holy See Press Office, the Holy Father and the head of state discussed the importance of environmental protection and climate change, which has had negative effects on Kiribati and other countries in the Pacific.
«In this regard, the hope was expressed that, on the occasion of the COP-21 to be held in Paris next December, the international Community may adopt concerted and effective measures to face this challenge,» the communique stated.
Following his audience with Pope Francis, President Tong met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States.
