Pope Francis last week appointed Bishop Titus Joseph Mdoe, auxiliary of the archdiocese of Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, as bishop of Mtwara, Tanzania.
He succeeds Bishop Gabriel Mmole, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese upon reaching the age limit was accepted by the Holy Father.
Titus Joseph Mdoe was born in 1961 and ordained in 1986. He was named an auxiliary of Dar-Es-Salaam in 2013.
The Diocese of Mtwara has a population of some 884,000, of whom 75,800 are Catholic. They are served by about 40 priests and 300 religious.
Malawi
On the same day, the Pope appointed Carmelite Fr. George Desmond Tambala as bishop of Zomba, Malawi.
He was born in Zomba, Malawi, in 1968, gave his religious vows in 1991 and was ordained a priest in 1996.
He holds a licentiate in theology, has served in a number of roles within his order, and has been a seminary professor and president of the Association of Superiors Major in Malawi. He is currently definitor general of the Carmelites.
The Diocese of Zomba has a population of about 822,000, with 233,000 Catholics. They are served by about 40 priests and 80 religious.
