U.S. President Donald Trump signed a decree yesterday prohibiting the promotion of abortion with Federal funds. Therefore, international NGO’s that promote abortion outside the United States, will no longer receive official financial support.
The international sector of Planned Parenthood, organization accused of selling parts of aborted fetuses in its clinics, is affected by the measure along with other institutions whose governmental funds will be curtailed.
Thus the new President distanced himself from the government of President Barack Obama, who in 2009 abrogated the norm against the international funding of abortion known as “the Mexico City policy,” proclaimed in that country in a UN Conference in 1984, during Ronald Reagan’s Administration (1981-89). Shortly after, Bill Clinton abolished the policy and then George W. Bush reinstated it.
According to data of the U.S. Agency for International Cooperation (USAID), the country allocates US$544 million to family planning policies worldwide, which advocate abortion.
Also among Trump’s first signed measures is the abolition of the free trade agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership for Economic Cooperation (TPP), as he promised during his electoral campaign.
