Pope Francis on May 20, 2018, offered prayers for the volatile situation in Venezuela.  He commented after praying the Regina Coeli with the crowd in St. Peter’s Square.
“I wish to dedicate a particular remembrance to our beloved Venezuela. I pray that the Holy Spirit will give all the Venezuelan people — all, rulers and people — the wisdom to find the path of peace and unity. I also pray for the detainees who died yesterday.”
Venezuelan Archbishop of Caracas, Cardinal Jorge Urosa, on May 17, 2018, said in an interview with Aid to the Church in Need that “to anticipate the presidential election on May 20 is an affront to the political rights of the Venezuelan people. We have the right to elect our leaders in freedom and with the appropriate procedures, with the ability to achieve a valid result democratically.”
