The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the Diocese of Niigata, Japan, the Reverend Fr. Paul Daisuke Narui, S.V.D., currently secretary for Justice and Peace at the General Curia of the Society of the Divine Word (Verbites), S.V.D., in Rome.

Reverend Fr. Paul Daisuke Narui

The Reverend Fr. Paul Daisuke Narui, S.V.D., was born on 24 September 1973 in Iwakura, in the diocese of Nagoya, and entered the minor seminary of the Society of the Divine Word in 1986. He gave his religious vows on 9 March 2000. From 1997 to 2001 he studied moral theology at the University of Nanzan, obtaining a bachelor’s degree and a licentiate.

He was ordained a priest on March 10, 2001, in the Church of Nanzan, Nagoya.

Since priestly ordination, he first served as assistant in the Church of Akita, diocese of Niigata (2001-2004), and then attended a formation course in the United States (2004-2006). He then held the following offices: prefect of postulants (2006-2008); prefect of professed with temporary vows (2006-2011); member of the Provincial Commission for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (2006-2013); member of the Commission for Migrants (2006-2014); secretary of Caritas Japan, head of aid department (2006-2015); provincial counselor (2008-2013); head of distribution of aid during the earthquake of 2011 (2011-2015); general coordinator of the Commission for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (2012-2015); and secretary for Justice and Peace at the General Curia of the Society of the Divine Word (S.V.D.), Rome.
