(ZENIT News / Mexico City, 13.12.2022).- Between December 8 and December 12, the Basilica of Guadalupe welcomed 11 million pilgrims, breaking the record of attendance prior to the pandemic.

The data was made known by the Head of the Government of Mexico City, Mrs Claudia Sheinbaum. “According to police officers, of all the celebrations it’s the one most attended by people. It is even estimated that, in the last 24 hours, more than five million” attended, said Sheinbaum.

The Head of the Government expressed her gratitude to all the people that made possible a celebration without problems. She thanked “the pilgrims for their exemplary behaviour.”

For his part, Martí Batres, Secretary of the City’s Government, said that 250,000 people received medical aid, hydration and food.

This human agglomeration implied, for the local authorities, the deployment of 5,400 security officers.

The previous record goes back to 2019 when 10.8 million people visited the Virgin of Guadalupe. The Basilica was closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2021 access to the Basilica was limited after going through health checks.

Twenty million people visited the Basilica in 2022, eleven million of them between December 8 to December 12. These figures make this Marian Shrine on of the most visited worldwide.
