(ZENIT News / Lviv, Ukraine, 20.09.2023).- Cardinal Konrad Krajewski is in Ukraine again these days to bring the Holy Father’s consolation to the people devastated by the war and to inaugurate a Shelter for women and children.

The Shelter was built during the conflict, to support the numerous people that fled from bombed areas, but who, not wishing to leave the country, sought refuge in Lviv. Several donors contributed to the Shelter’s construction, among them and substantially the Holy Father, through the Dicastery for the Service of Charity.

Single mothers with their children and homeless women will be housed there in appropriately prepared rooms. There will also be a soup kitchen in the Shelter for the poor to provide hot food for them and a welcoming environment. The Shelter will be run by the Albertine Sisters.

In regard to the attack on the Caritas – Spes warehouse, a facility used many times as deposit for the material sent by Pope Francis to the Ukrainian people, such as energy generators taken to the most isolated areas affected by the conflict, Cardinal Krajewsky said: “I am sad about what happened in Lviv with the attack on the Caritas – Spes warehouse. They struck to destroy the possibility to help the suffering people.”

Despite the constant bombings, the Almoner will open the Shelter on the Pope’s behalf, as a sign of support, help and closeness to the numerous people wo have been obliged to flee from their homes, due to the conflict, bringing to them the Apostolic Blessing.

For this reason, this week he will also visit the different communities that take in refugees, thanking all the volunteers, and all those that help the needy suffering people who are far from their homes.
