(ZENIT News / Budapest, 04.02.2023).- On the eve of the Pope’s arrival in the Hungarian capital, the country’s President, Katalin Novák made an announcement that, after the conclusion of the Pope’s visit, has gained more notoriety: the pardon of some prisoners
A communiqué on the President’s institutional Website reads:
“The week of the papal visit is a special occasion for the Head of State to exercise her power of pardon. Therefore, the President of the Republic decided to issue a broad pardon on this occasion. Among others, the President of the Republic pardoned those convicted in the case known as the Hunnia trial, in whose case she decided to suspend imprisonment.”
According to the Hungarian media, it’s about individuals such as György Budaházy and at least nine other companions. The Blikk newspaper specified: “The pardon affects Budahazy, sentenced in March to six years of prison by Budapest’s Court of Appeal, and another nine members of his extreme right Hunnia terrorist group. Between 2007 and 2009 the group was responsible for many fires and attacks with explosives against the homes of Liberal and Leftist politicians, as well as the beating up of a television producer. According to the charges, the Hunnia group had also planned a murder and an attack against bars frequented by homosexuals.”
