(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 15.11.2023).- The Government of Vatican City State announced on Wednesday, November 15, its commitment to attain climate neutrality through the responsible use of natural resources, the implementation of energy efficiency projects and the updating of its technological assets, sustainable mobility, diversification and the supply of cleaner energy products or alternatives for transport, the elimination of residues and the development of concrete future reforestation projects.
The above is translated into a sustainable mobility development program called “Ecological Reconversion 2030,” geared also to reducing the CO2 footprint of its vehicle fleet.
To do so, it proposes to replace gradually its State-owned cars with electric vehicles, so that its vehicle fleet is carbon neutral by 2030; to establish its own recharge network in State and extraterritorial areas, extending its use to its own employees; and to guarantee that its energy needs come exclusively from renewable energy sources. The Volkswagen Group — whose objective is to become a carbon neutral company in 2050 and reduce the carbon footprint of its vehicles by 30% in 2030 — is the first strategic partner for the renovation of the State’s vehicle fleet with Volkswagen and Skoda brand cars through medium and long-term rentals.
Given all of the above, an association agreement was signed on November 15 with the Volkswagen Group, as part of the development program of sustainable mobility, which is one of the steps taken by the Governorate to reduce in a concrete way the impact of human activity on the environment.
Stated specifically in a press release is that “To achieve neutrality would require investing in technological installations that use renewal energy, compensate the emissions produced in a sector reducing them in another, but above all to promote electrical or hybrid mobility.”
