The Pope’s 8-Hour Visit to Venice: A Prison, Young People and the Famous Basilica of Saint Mark

The main reason for the Pontiff’s trip to Venice is to take part in Venice’s Biennial, where the Holy See will have a pavilion. The Biennial is one of the most important artistic events in the world.

(ZENIT News / Rome, 26.03.2024).- On Sunday, April 28, 2024, Pope Francis will visit the famous Italian city of Venice, See of the Catholic Patriarchate of the same name, on the occasion of the Biennial.

During 8 hours the Pope will have a very tight agenda. He will leave from the Vatican’s heliport at 6:30 am, and land at 8:00 am in the Women’s Prison located in one of Venice’s Islands. He will be welcomed there by Monsignor Francesco Moraglia, Archbishop of Venice, and by the prison’s Authorities.

Fifteen minutes later, at 8:15 am, the Holy Father will meet with a group of 80 women, inmates in the prison, whom he will greet personally. Members of the administrative staff, volunteers and police who work in the prison will be present.

After the meeting in the prison’s patio, the Pontiff will go at 8:45 am to Magdalen’s church inside the prison, where he will be welcomed  by the Prefect of the Holy See’s Dicastery for Culture and Education, Cardinal José Tolentino. Minutes later, at 9:00 am Pope Francis will meet with artists and authorities taking part in Venice’s Biennial, and will give an address.

At 9:30 am the Pope will leave the Island where the prison is located and go in a patrol boat to the Venetian Basilica of Saint Mary of Salvation. He will meet at 10:00 am in the Basilica’s Square with young people of the Archdiocese of Venice and of the dioceses of the Italian region of Veneto. At the end of his address, the will go across the bridge that connects famous Saint Mark’s Square, where he will be received by the local Authorities, including the President of the Veneto Region, the Prefect of Venice and the city’s Mayor.

At 11:00 am the Pope will preside over a Eucharistic Concelebration in Saint Mark’s Square. At the end of the Holy Mass, he will enter Saint Mark’s Basilica to venerate the Saint’s relics privately. Then he will go in a patrol boat to the heliport of the Naval College to bid farewell to the Civil and Religious Authorities and fly, around 1:00 pm, back to the Vatican. It is expected that the Pope will land in the Vatican’s heliport around 2:30 pm.
