18 Executed in China in One Day

BEIJING, NOV. 7, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Eighteen people were executed here Tuesday, 10 of them in just a quarter hour, the Beijing Evening News reported.

The state newspaper reported that the first group of 10 condemned people were taken to the place of execution at 9 a.m. Fifteen minutes later all were dead.

Before being led to execution, Ma Jun, 23, told a reporter: «When I was little I used to like to watch executions. I never thought it would happen to me.»

Ma and Jiao Wenjun, 30, robbed and killed victims with iron bars, smashing them on the head, the state newspaper reported. All the condemned were robbers and killers, aged 20 to 30.

According to Amnesty International, China´s «Strike Hard» campaign against criminals has resulted in 1,800 executions between April and July.

In less than four months, China has carried out more executions than the rest of the world has in the past three years, Amnesty International reported.
