The cathedral will be built in Union Square, in the heart of the capital, not far from the patriarchate´s headquarters.
The building will accommodate 6,000 people, Bishop Vincentiu Ploiesteanul said last weekend when he announced the December launching of the fund-raising campaign.
An area flanking the cathedral will be able to accommodate 20,000 people. The municipality of Bucharest has offered 4.1 hectares (10.1 acres) for the project, which is expected to take five years to finish.
