Appeal for Aid to Victims of Volcano in Congo

VATICAN CITY, JAN. 20, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II appealed for aid to the residents of Goma, the Congolese city partially buried by the eruption of the Mount Nyiragongo volcano.

In a statement Saturday, the Congo´s Council of Ministers said that «600,000 compatriots have been expelled and are seeking shelter in nature, in the cold, without food, without potable water, or electricity or medicines, exposed to all kinds of risks.»

After praying the Angelus with pilgrims at midday today, the Pope appealed to his listeners not «to be lacking in assistance to all those who suffer because of this great calamity.»
