Monsignor Volante, 53, is replacing Archbishop Agostino Marchetto, who was appointed last November as secretary of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Travelers.
Born in Trieste, Italy, in 1948, Renato Volante obtained a licentiate in moral theology and has been engaged in the Vatican´s diplomatic service since 1979. He has worked in Brazil, Tanzania, Chile, India, Ireland, the United States and Canada.
Monsignor Volante´s work will be of particular importance, as a result of last week´s World Food Summit, organized by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, when the Pope called for a campaign against hunger and promised the Church´s commitment to this endeavor.
