«Our people want Aristide to resign, because they can no longer endure the injustice that his administration is implanting in Haiti,» a member of the Haitian Catholic hierarchy told the Germany-based charity in a telephone interview.
The prelate, who asked anonymity, noted that close to three-quarters of the country’s people live in abject poverty.
«In fact, the Aristide government is an anarchy, and it is scandalous that the president’s security is guaranteed by a North American team paid with Haitian money,» he continued.
«Violence is part of daily life: practically every day the deaths of innocent people and assaults on buses are registered,» he said. «Now more than ever our people need prayers and foreign support.»
In 2002, Aid to the Church in Need supported pastoral projects in Haiti amounting to over 900,000 euros ($1 million).
