Before flying to Colombia, from Rome’s Fiumicino airport on September 6, 2017, Pope Francis received two families, whose dwellings were destroyed by Rome’s summer fires, reported the Director of the Holy See Press Office.
As is the Holy Father’s usual stop for a moment of prayer at Saint Mary Major, it is now a tradition for a group of people in a difficult situation – refugees, homeless . . . to greet the Pope before his international trips. This time the Pontiff met with five persons at Casa Santa Marta, before going to the airport, explained Greg Burke. The two families are victims of the fires that ravaged the Ponte Mammolo sector, north of the Eternal City, in early July.
The Papal Almonry is helping the families, who wished him a safe trip.
Before embarking for Fatima, Portugal, last May, the Holy Father met with mothers in difficult situations, six women “with personal stories of suffering and malaise.”
